Rock Wall Repair on Pony Express

Background:

The archway on the Pony Express Entrance fell over in a previous windstorm due to poor reconstruction. When the board was elected, the structure was an initial concern, with the largest concern being the cost to replace the structure back to what it was. The damage to the rock wall as well as to install the posts properly to support an arch was going to involve significant reconstruction. Other ideas were requested that would be a more cost-effective option.

The only option presented was to do cutout metal letters, and mount them to the existing rock walls that would need repairing. A couple of design options were selected and sent out as a poll, to get community feedback on which direction to go, if at all. The results of the lettering options were minimal, however, as part of the poll, it was asked if anyone would be willing to volunteer time to install the letters or assist in the repair of the rock wall, 2 people did volunteer for that. Also, it was requested if anyone had any other design ideas, other than metal lettering and no other options were mentioned. Despite rumors to the contrary, the metal arched lettering was discussed with the lot owner before it was ever presented to the community with respect to their concern about shootings. The lot owner did not take issue with the arched lettering, although restoration of the original arch structure was still the preference.

At the HOA meeting on Oct 12, the results of this poll were discussed. The next steps were to get a final lettering quote with that version of the letters as well as a quote from a contractor to install the letters and repair the rock wall, in the event that the volunteers were not able to assist due to the timing as not all volunteers are local.

Update:

After the HOA meeting, Tara did call a recommended local contact to get a quote for the rock wall repair. However, volunteers in the community have since come forward to purchase mortar and repair the rock wall. This saves the community money and allows for faster restoration of the rock wall than anticipated. The lot owner acknowledges that the existing rock wall is the HOA's duty to maintain. The board has voted to approve anyone who wants to volunteer time to repair the damaged rock walls to do so, with the understanding that it is at no cost to the association. We do have some assumptions in place to ensure no costs come about and to protect those working on the effort:

1) Stay within the existing road easement boundaries

2) Donated mortar will be used on the rock wall to adhere fallen rocks to the existing rock wall

3) Only existing rocks will be utilized, as no new rock purchases are authorized

4) Any extra rocks not needed, will be removed from the immediate rock wall location, at no expense to the association

5) No one is to touch, move, disposition, or alter the wooden sign

6) Please let the board know if or when you will be out there, so we can be aware of work being done

7) Work carefully and safely!
